Search and Rescue teams are trained to perform specific disciplines or rescues. Some SAR teams are single discipline teams, such as a dive rescue team, these teams are trained and equipped to handle one type of rescue. IA-TF1 is a multi-discipline team and is capable of responding to man made and natural disasters involving structural collapse and confined space incidents were rescue or recoveries are needed. The team is made up of Search Specialists, Rescue Specialists, Medical Specialists, Hazardous Materials Technicians, Communication Specialists, Safety Officer Specialists, Logistics, Liaison and Support personnel.
IA-TF1 is equipped with heavy rescue equipment designed to cut through steel and concrete, as well as spreading, drilling, and shoring equipment. IA-TF1’s search equipment includes acoustic detection equipment designed to hear faint voices under large volumes of debris, video search cameras designed to access small areas, thermal imaging devices, GPS (Global Positioning System) equipment, high angle rope rescue gear, SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus), generators, area lighting equipment, air monitoring equipment, and it’s own communication equipment. This equipment, along with the teams other hand tools and rescue equipment, is transportable on the team’s two semi-trailers, one stationed in Sioux City the other stationed in Cedar Rapids.
The members of IA-TF1 received their rescue training from the FEMA certified personnel of Texas Task Force-1 (TX-TF1) in Collage Station, Texas. The initial training at Collage Station is a ten day course held at the Technical Skills and Building Collapse Training Area. All team members will be required to receive this initial training which certifies them as Rescue Technicians.
Individual team members may then choose to receive further training in search, haz-mat, high angle rope rescue, logistics, communications, and other technical specialty fields.
